Bituminous coal is the most common coal. It is dense, black, often with well-defined bands of bright and dull materials. Its moisture content usually is less than 20 percent. It is used for generating electricity, making coke and space heating. The contents of subbituminous and bituminous coal range from 16 million to 24 million Btu per ton and from 19 million to 30 million Btu per ton, respectively.
